Real Wood Paper is genuine wood veneer made from real trees and transformed into thin, flexible sheets that can be used much like paper while retaining the natural beauty of wood.
Each sheet has real wood on the front with a backing that adds strength, flexibility or adhesive depending on the product selected. Real Wood Paper can be printed, cut with craft cutting machines, scored, folded, punched, laser cut, laser engraved, wood burned, painted, stained and used for countless creative projects.
Because it is made from genuine wood, every sheet has natural variations in grain, color and character. No two sheets or projects will ever be exactly alike.
The best backing depends on your project.
- Vellum Backed (.010″) – our thinnest, most flexible option; ideal for lightweight and translucent applications.
- Adhesive Backed (.013″) – peel-and-stick backing for easy application without liquid glue.
- Paper Backed (.016″) – versatile for printing, invitations, paper crafts and projects that will be adhered to another surface.
- Wood Backed (.025″) – real wood on both sides for projects where both sides will be visible.
- Wood Panels (1/16″ and 1/8″) – thicker, sturdier options designed for projects such as laser cutting, engraving, wood burning, painting and staining.

Yes! Real Wood Paper can produce beautiful printed results. A laser printer with a manual or straight-through feed generally works best for DIY printing.
Some inkjet printers can also work with certain wood species, although wet ink may bleed into the natural wood grain. We recommend testing your printer and wood selection before beginning your final project.

Yes! Real Wood Paper works beautifully with Cricut machines. The appropriate blade, mat and settings depend on the thickness and backing you are cutting.

Yes. Real Wood Paper can be laser cut and engraved. Our thicker 1/16″ and 1/8″ Real Wood Panels are especially well suited for laser projects and produce a beautiful warm brown tone when engraved or cut.

Curling can occur because Real Wood Paper is genuine wood and can respond to changes in humidity.
Use a clothes iron on a warm—not hot—setting over the sheet, then immediately place the wood under a heavy book, box or other flat weight while it cools. This will help return it to a flatter state.
To help prevent curling, keep unused Real Wood Paper in its original packaging until you’re ready to use it.

Unlike printed wood-grain paper, the surface is actual wood, complete with the natural grain, color and characteristics of the tree it came from.
Yes! The surface of Real Wood Paper is genuine wood veneer made from real trees. It is not a printed wood pattern or imitation wood product.
That’s why every sheet has its own natural grain, color and character.
Our six standard wood species are:

Because we’re working with genuine wood, availability can vary based on the wood stock available to us.

Our standard species are the six woods we regularly offer: Aspen, Birch, Cherry, Maple, Walnut and White Pine.
Exotic species are woods outside our standard collection that may offer distinctive colors, grains or other characteristics and may have different pricing and availability.
Variegated woods are selected for distinctive natural figure, grain or visual characteristics. A variegated wood is not necessarily exotic. For example, Bird’s Eye Maple is a variegated wood, but it is not considered an exotic species and is not one of our six standard species.
Our six standard species are always available, while exotic and variegated woods may have more limited or changing availability.
Real Wood Paper is available in several thicknesses and backing styles:
- Vellum Backed: .010″ / 10 mil / .254 mm
- Adhesive Backed: .013″ / 13 mil / .330 mm
- Paper Backed: .016″ / 16 mil / .406 mm
- Wood Backed: .025″ / 25 mil / .635 mm
- Wood Panels: 1/16″ / 1.588 mm and 1/8″ / 3.175 mm

Choose your backing based on what you need the material to do.
For maximum flexibility, choose Vellum Backed. For a built-in peel-and-stick adhesive, choose Adhesive Backed. For versatile printing and paper crafting, Paper Backed is an excellent choice. When you want real wood visible on both sides, choose Wood Backed. For sturdier laser, engraving and woodworking projects, consider our 1/16″ or 1/8″ Wood Panels.
If you’re unsure, we recommend testing a small quantity before ordering materials for a large project.
At approximately .010″ thick, Vellum Backed Real Wood Paper is our thinnest and most flexible option.
Its thin, sheer backing makes it ideal for projects such as:

Our .010″ Fleece Backed Real Wood Paper is now called Vellum Backed Real Wood Paper. It is the same ultra-thin, sheer and flexible real wood veneer product; we’re simply using “Vellum Backed” because it better describes the look, feel and flexibility of the backing. If you’ve ordered Fleece Backed Real Wood Paper from us in the past, look for Vellum Backed when ordering again
Adhesive Backed Real Wood Paper is approximately .013″ thick and includes a convenient peel-and-stick backing.
It’s ideal for labels, stickers, cardmaking, scrapbooking, layered projects and applying genuine wood veneer to paper or lightweight surfaces without liquid glue. The adhesive is stronger than a removable sticker but less aggressive than a permanent adhesive. The material can be cut with scissors, punches and craft cutting machines
Paper Backed Real Wood Paper is approximately .016″ thick and is one of our most versatile options.
It’s frequently used for printing, wedding invitations, announcements, paper crafts and projects where the wood veneer will be adhered to cardstock, wood or another material.
The paper backing provides additional body while remaining flexible.
Wood Backed Real Wood Paper is approximately .025″ thick and has genuine wood on both sides.
It’s a great choice for invitations, menus, announcements, programs, bookmarks and other projects where both sides may be visible.
Although sturdier than our thinner products, it remains flexible and may be compatible with laser printers that have an appropriate straight-through feed.
Our 1/16″ and 1/8″ Real Wood Panels are thicker and sturdier than our flexible wood veneer sheets.

When laser engraved or cut, the wood develops a beautiful warm brown tone.
Our .025″ Wood Backed Real Wood Paper has genuine wood on both sides.
This makes it an excellent choice for projects where the front and back of the finished piece will both be visible.
Our .013″ Adhesive Backed Real Wood Paper has a built-in peel-and-stick backing.
Simply cut your piece, remove the protective backing and apply it to your project surface.
Short grain and long grain describe the direction the natural wood fibers run in relation to the dimensions of the sheet.
- Short Grain: The grain runs along the shorter dimension of the sheet.
- Long Grain: The grain runs along the longer dimension of the sheet.
Grain direction can affect the flexibility, strength, appearance and folding characteristics of the material.

Yes. Grain direction can be particularly important when scoring, folding or bending Real Wood Paper.
Whenever possible, fold or score with the grain. Folding against the grain puts more stress on the natural wood fibers and may increase the likelihood of cracking or splintering.
No—and that’s part of what makes real wood beautiful.
Every sheet comes from a genuine tree and has its own natural color, grain and character. Photographs are representative of a wood species, but the sheets you receive will naturally vary.

Yes. Natural variations in color, grain, figure and texture are expected because Real Wood Paper is made from real trees.
No two trees are identical, so no two sheets of Real Wood Paper are exactly alike.
These variations are a natural characteristic of real wood and are not considered defects.
We cannot guarantee an exact color or grain match to a previous order.
Because Real Wood Paper is a natural product, each batch reflects the wood stock available at the time it is produced. Even sheets of the same species can have natural differences in color and grain.
If your project requires a very specific appearance, we recommend ordering enough material for the entire project at one time.
Yes. Real Wood Paper is made from genuine wood, and no chemicals or water are used during the wood veneer production process. The veneer is natural and biodegradable.
Sustainability is important to us. The logs used to create Real Wood Paper are sourced from companies that follow sustainable forestry and harvesting practices. One of our sources plants more than 5,000 new trees each year.
Our Real Wood Paper veneer sheets are bonded to their backing using a modified UVA adhesive that is formaldehyde-free and contains no harmful chemicals.
Printing
Yes! Real Wood Paper can be printed and produces beautiful results for invitations, announcements, menus, cards, business materials, crafts and many other projects.
Printer capabilities vary, so we always recommend testing the wood with your specific printer before beginning a large project.

For DIY printing, a laser printer with a manual or straight-through feed works best.
For Professional printing, our experience shows that most printing companies can use their existing laser printers, digital printers, and other equipment to produce beautiful results on Real Wood Paper. We recommend checking with your printer manufacturer for compatibility with wood-based materials.

Yes. Laser printers, especially those with a manual or straight-through feed, are our recommended option for DIY printing on Real Wood Paper.
We’ve tested several popular printer models to help customers find equipment that works well with wood veneer sheets.

Some inkjet printers can work with Real Wood Paper, but inkjet is not our recommended printing method.
Inkjet ink is wet and can bleed into the natural grain before it dries. Results vary depending on the printer, ink and wood species.
If using an inkjet printer, always test first.
In our experience, Birch and Maple, and sometimes Cherry, tend to produce better inkjet results than some other species.
However, inkjet printers and inks vary considerably, so testing is essential.
The best backing/thickness choice depends on your printer and finished project.
Vellum Backed (.010″) is our thinnest, most flexible option for printed projects. Its thin profile makes it easy for most printers to pull through the printer feed. Due to the thinness of this wood sheet, we do recommend adhering to another cardstock or material to help resist natural curling over time.
Adhesive Backed (.013″) is generally not recommended for printing. The adhesive liner has a slick surface that can make it difficult for printer rollers to grab and feed the sheet properly.
Paper Backed (.016″) is the sweet spot between Vellum Backed and Wood Backed sheets. The textured paper backing feeds easily through most printers, while the sheet is thick enough that light does not readily show through. It remains very flexible, and the textured backing is also ideal for adhering to cardstock or another material which also helps resist natural curling over time.
Wood Backed (.025″) is especially popular for wedding invitations, save-the-date cards, menus and other projects where both sides will be visible. There’s no need to adhere it to cardstock because there is beautiful real wood on both sides, and the added thickness helps resist natural curling over time.
Wood Backed sheets are still flexible, but grain direction matters, particularly when bending, scoring or folding. View our [LINK: Grain Direction Guide] for more information.
Because of its thickness, some printers may not be able to feed Wood Backed sheets. Check your printer manual for its maximum media thickness before printing.
Printer specifications vary, so we always recommend testing the exact wood species, backing and thickness you intend to use before beginning a large project.
Yes. Many professional printing companies can produce excellent results using laser printers, digital printers and other commercial equipment.

Yes. Real Wood Paper can be scored and folded.
For the best results, create a crisp score line with the grain of the wood. You may need to go over the score line more than once before gently folding the sheet.
Whenever possible, score and fold with the grain.
Folding against the grain places more stress on the natural wood fibers and can make cracking or splintering more likely.
If your design requires a fold against the grain, use gentle pressure and consider lightly misting or warming the wood first to increase flexibility.
Yes. Real Wood Paper is genuine wood veneer and can be painted for craft and decorative projects.
As with any finish, test your paint on a scrap first because different wood species and products may absorb finishes differently.

Yes. Real Wood Paper can be used for wood-burning projects. Our thicker Wood Panels are especially well suited for applications where additional structure is helpful.
Always follow the safety instructions provided with your wood-burning equipment.
For many craft and DIY projects, we recommend Beacon’s 3-in-1 Craft Glue. It dries clear and works well with our Real Wood Paper thicknesses.
For miniatures, detailed designs and precision applications, Bearly Art Precision Craft Glue is another option we use because its fine applicator provides greater control.
Always test your adhesive on a small scrap first.

Choose .013″ Adhesive Backed Real Wood Paper when you want the convenience of a built-in peel-and-stick backing.
It’s especially useful for labels, cardmaking, scrapbooking, lightweight surfaces and projects where you’d rather avoid applying liquid glue.
For projects requiring a stronger or specialized bond, another backing combined with an appropriate adhesive may be a better choice.
Care & Troubleshooting
Keep Real Wood Paper in its original packaging until you’re ready to use it and store it flat whenever possible.
Because it is real wood, exposure to changes in humidity can cause the material to curl or warp.
Curling is a natural response that can occur when genuine wood veneer is exposed to changes in humidity.
Use a clothes iron on a warm—not hot—setting over the entire sheet. Then immediately place the sheet under a heavy book, box or another flat weight while it cools.
This will help return the sheet to a flatter state.
If a sheet has developed a curl, warm the entire sheet with a clothes iron set to warm—not hot. Then place it flat beneath a heavy book, box or other weight and allow it to cool.
Flattening the material before printing, cutting or assembling your project can make it easier to work with.
Yes. A regular clothes iron can help flatten curled Real Wood Paper.
Use a warm setting, never hot, and warm the entire sheet before placing it under a flat weight to cool.
Heat can reactivate the adhesive within the material and help make the wood more flexible.
Whenever possible, score, fold and bend Real Wood Paper with the grain rather than against it.
For additional flexibility, lightly mist the area with water before folding. You can also warm the area with a clothes iron on a warm—not hot—setting. The warmth helps reactivate the adhesive and makes the material more flexible.
Use gentle pressure when scoring so you don’t cut completely through the sheet.
Some species, including Birch, Maple and Cherry, may fold more easily than others. We recommend practicing on a scrap first when your project requires a challenging fold.
Minor splinters and rough edges can usually be cleaned up easily.
Use fine-grit sandpaper or a fine nail file to gently smooth the affected wood fibers. This works well on sheets, folds, bookmarks, cut shapes and other finished pieces.
If small splinters appear along a fold, gently sand the area after folding.
Simply smooth the edge with fine-grit sandpaper or a fine nail file.
Because Real Wood Paper is genuine wood veneer, you may occasionally encounter a small wood fiber or slightly rough edge. Gentle sanding can quickly create a smoother finished edge.
Yes. Real Wood Paper can be lightly sanded.
Use fine-grit sandpaper and gentle pressure to smooth rough edges, stray wood fibers or small splinters. A fine nail file also works well for small pieces such as bookmarks and detailed cut shapes.

Returns & Refunds
We want you to love your Real Wood Paper products. Because our products are made from natural wood and many orders are project-specific, return eligibility depends on the reason for the return and the condition and quantity of the products.
If you have a concern with your order, contact us within 3 days of delivery with details and photographs when applicable.
Eligible standard returns receive store credit, while confirmed defective products qualify for a refund or exchange.

Damage during transit is caused by the shipping carrier and is not considered a product defect. We typically ship through USPS, which includes limited insurance on qualifying packages.

Eligible products may be returned for store credit when:
- You contact us within 3 days of delivery.
